Emily Tilton had never played defense before, but last season, Naperville Central coach Troy Adams decided to switch her position from forward to enhance the defense. Her quickness, honed through indoor track, made her well-suited for the outside back role. Adams knew that although defenders rarely receive accolades unless they score, Tilton would excel in her new position.
During her sophomore year, Tilton effectively held her own against some of the best players in state competitions. In the Class 3A Naperville Central Sectional championship game, she was tasked with marking Benet senior forward Annie Fitzgerald. Adams stated, “Tilton marked her most of the game. She’s been matched up against several top talents recently.” He praised her maturity and suggested that she could be a hidden gem for college recruiters.
In the championship game, Fitzgerald managed one shot over the crossbar early and had just one more attempt during the game. Junior forward Emerson Burke secured victory for the top-seeded Redhawks by scoring a penalty kick, leading to a 1-0 win. They now advance to face Wheaton Warrenville South in the St. Charles North Supersectional.
Fitzgerald acknowledged the competitive nature of both teams, expressing pride in the defensive displays. Tilton commented on her approach to defense as the need to prevent advancement rather than always winning possession. She credited teamwork and communication for the solid defensive effort.
Tilton’s contributions extend beyond her position switch. Naperville Central senior forward Malia Shen complimented Tilton’s soccer intelligence and patience. This was evident in her defense against Fitzgerald’s attacks. Aside from a few corner kicks, Benet struggled to penetrate Naperville Central’s defense.
Coach Adams previously repositioned players like Burke and Shen to defense but has since moved them back to forward. With all three providing speed and strategic play, Burke noted Tilton’s improvements this season, especially her confidence and effectiveness in ball control.
The Redhawks achieved success on both offensive and defensive fronts. Burke’s penalty secured her 37th goal of the season, adding to her team record. Despite the emphasis on scoring, she expressed that winning happens to be most important. Naperville Central carries this winning mentality into every game.
