Jackson Mansker, playing for Lincoln-Way West, experienced a challenging moment reminiscent of a major league play when he was denied a home run. This remarkable defensive play prompted an emotional reaction from Mansker, who struck the bench in frustration, injuring his knuckles in the process.
Mansker explained, “I’ve been getting wall balls all season. I think it’s happened to me 10 times. I was just frustrated. I never get mad that easily.”
However, this incident turned into a positive outcome. In a subsequent at-bat, Mansker channeled his frustration into a powerful two-run homer. This crucial hit in the fifth inning broke a deadlock and contributed significantly to the Warriors’ 6-2 victory against the Vikings during the Class 4A Homewood-Flossmoor Regional championship.
Carson Paulas played a key role with two hits and two RBIs, leading Lincoln-Way West to their sixth regional title, their fourth in five years. Pitcher Owen Chudzinski secured the win by pitching three scoreless innings in relief.
Owen Weber, the senior catcher, made a significant defensive play that prevented a rally with the bases loaded. His quick reaction and throw to third baseman Mansker ended the inning and kept the game tied.
Reflecting on his performance, Weber said, “I needed to block the ball and keep it in front of me. But I saw the runner off the base and needed to take advantage of it.”
Marcos Morales, the junior center fielder for H-F, made a leaping catch that stopped what many thought would be a home run. Mansker acknowledged, “I thought it was gone. Props to him for making a really good catch.”
During the game, Mansker’s four plate appearances were eventful. His first hit was a double that struck the center field wall. In another remarkable moment, he was intentionally walked with two outs in the sixth inning.
Mansker, who is also committed to playing football in college, adjusted his batting stance by lifting his left heel, an adaptation he initially resisted. Assistant coach Jeff Struebing encouraged this change, believing it would enhance Mansker’s swing. Struebing noted, “He’s as athletic as anyone in the state, but his swing wasn’t athletic. We just got him on the front ball of the foot to get a little taller.”
Paulas, speaking about his teammate, highlighted their off-field friendship, saying, “I know if I get on base, he will send one through the hole, and I’ll be running home. He’s a great guy, and it’s not just baseball.”
