Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate challenging Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins in Maine, has come under fire following reports of exchanging sexual texts with several women after his marriage. Platner’s campaign confirmed to Politico that his wife, Amy Gertner, learned of these texts shortly after Platner began his Senate campaign.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the messages were discovered by Gertner months after their 2024 marriage. She shared this information with a campaign aide, who chose to regard the texts as a personal issue, according to the campaign’s statement.
Gertner stated, “I confided deeply personal details about my marriage to someone I considered a friend. In the months since, I have had to watch as she spread malicious gossip to anyone who would take her call.” She expressed her hurt over the perceived betrayal, adding that she and her husband have worked through their marital challenges together.
Gertner emphasized, “Our marriage today is stronger than ever before.” She affirmed her trust in Platner and their joint commitment to their relationship.
Platner, an oyster farmer and military veteran, has faced other controversies. These include a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol, past comments on Reddit minimizing sexual assault, and derogatory remarks. A recent University of New Hampshire poll indicated Platner leading among Maine voters with 51% support compared to 42% for Collins.
Following Maine Gov. Janet Mills’ withdrawal from the race in April, Platner is seen as the presumptive Democratic nominee. Rep. Ro Khanna of California expressed continued support for Platner, praising his stances against war and economic inequality.
Senator Collins has labeled Platner as too extreme, yet Platner criticizes Collins for supporting policies that benefit corporations over workers. He accuses her of backing foreign wars.
Platner’s platform includes addressing corporate influence and advocating for economic fairness, which he hopes will resonate with Maine voters.
