The LSU Tigers and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) are embroiled in a significant controversy within the sports community. The LSU football program, led by head coach Lane Kiffin, sought to recruit two former NFL players, tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, for the 2026 season. Both athletes previously played under Kiffin at Ole Miss but later joined NFL teams during the summer. This move conflicts with the rules set by the SEC and the NCAA. Despite this, a Louisiana judge temporarily permitted the inclusion of the players, setting off a complex dispute involving the school and its conference.
Following the controversy, LSU announced that it would not include the two players in its roster for the 2026 season, describing the issue as “moot.” Nonetheless, the SEC plans to hold a “special meeting” on Thursday to consider expelling LSU from the conference. This potential action has sparked varied opinions from sports analysts throughout the week. One notable voice, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko, shared his perspective.
Elko compared the situation to “a son testing boundaries until confronted by a parent.” He commented, “This is a little bit like the son figuring out where the limits are until dad comes home and raises his voice, and then the son goes, ‘I was just kidding, I didn’t mean any of that.'”
The possibility of the SEC formally removing LSU, one of its oldest and most successful teams, is largely perceived as unlikely. Many see it as a bluff. The SEC stands to lose significantly by severing ties with a prominent team like LSU and a controversial yet high-profile figure like Kiffin. Evidence from Notre Dame shows that a strong brand combined with an elite schedule and significant television deals can allow a program to succeed independently. It appears that the SEC benefits more from LSU’s presence than the reverse.
Elko underscores an important point. Kiffin is notorious for pushing the boundaries of regulations. Now, as the SEC hints at genuine disciplinary measures, LSU has effectively retreated from the dispute.
