On Saturday, vast numbers of Iranians gathered in Tehran to witness the state funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the former supreme leader who played a major role in Iran for decades before his death. He was killed during the U.S.-Israeli conflict in February. The funeral marked the start of six days of public mourning ceremonies.
The Grand Mosalla mosque in Tehran became the focal point as tens of thousands arrived early to participate. Millions are expected to attend nationwide as the ayatollah’s body travels to various cities for further ceremonies. This reflects the deep impact of his leadership on the country’s history.
Journalists on site reported emotional scenes as grieving supporters viewed the caskets of Ayatollah Khamenei and his family members, also victims of the conflict. Encased in glass and adorned with Iranian flags, the caskets were prominently displayed, with the ayatollah’s positioned above the others.
Iran faces significant challenges during this period. The country has recently experienced widespread antigovernment protests, harsh crackdowns, and months of conflict with the United States and Israel. The initial Israeli airstrikes claimed the lives of Ayatollah Khamenei and key Iranian leaders, highlighting ongoing tensions.
While many mourn the ayatollah’s death, others express frustration over the extensive funeral arrangements. During his 37 years of rule, Khamenei suppressed dissent and oversaw a period marked by economic and governance issues. This legacy leaves mixed emotions among the populace regarding his passing.
