The World Cup match between Mexico and England will remain at its original scheduled time, amid concerns about a possible afternoon thunderstorm. This decision was made following discussions within FIFA.
Initially, FIFA considered moving the round of 16 game to an earlier time. The match is set to take place at Azteca Stadium at 6 p.m. local time (8 p.m. EDT). Sources close to the situation reported the possibility of rescheduling due to potential flooding.
A Mexican federation official confirmed that FIFA decided to keep the game unchanged. The decision was influenced by factors including possible disruptions due to weather conditions.
Mexico coach Javier Aguirre expressed criticism of the proposed change, stating that altering the time would disrupt careful planning. Aguirre mentioned, “It’s a kick in the gut; now we must change everything. It’s not that all the work goes down the drain — though it’s close — because you’re having to scrap six hours of scheduled planning. I don’t like it at all. Obviously, we’ll abide by what FIFA says, but neither my players nor I are happy about it.”
The rescheduling would have also impacted England’s preparations. The team, scheduled to arrive late Friday, planned to train at UNAM Pumas grounds, leaving limited time to adapt to Mexico City’s high elevation. Azteca Stadium is located over 7,300 feet above sea level. This elevation requires extended acclimation for peak athletic performance due to lower atmospheric pressure and reduced oxygen levels.
Sports experts recommend a minimum two-week acclimation or a “fly-in, fly-out” approach. England coach Thomas Tuchel commented on the challenges faced by his team, noting, “My understanding is that we cannot adapt to the altitude. That is just a huge advantage that Mexico will have. It just takes too much time.”
This game will mark Mexico City’s fifth and final match of the World Cup.
