Mayor Zohran Mamdani has focused on addressing issues raised by Black leaders and residents in New York. These efforts have aimed to rectify oversights and policy decisions that appear to have excluded them.
In early May, during a breakfast meeting with Black clergy and elected officials, Mayor Mamdani highlighted several initiatives from his administration. He announced the creation of an office to combat deed theft and the suspension of tax lien sales. He also compared his electoral achievements with those of David Dinkins, the city’s first Black mayor.
Despite these efforts, some Black leaders perceive certain actions by Mr. Mamdani as inadequate. His conciliatory measures have not fully assuaged their concerns.
In April, the mayor released a racial equity plan, describing it as a starting point for addressing historical neglect and discrimination. However, critics noted omissions. References to diversity, equity, and inclusion were removed to avoid conflict with the Trump administration.
The city’s Commission on Racial Equity plans to criticize this plan in an upcoming report. The commission found the plan lacking key components mandated by the City Charter, such as strategies to enhance racial equity in budgeting and policymaking.
Linda Tigani, head of the commission, remarked that the report failed to explicitly address racial concerns. She noted the absence of specific mentions of Black and brown communities and their inclusion in the government’s racial equity efforts.
