Before the game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football, a tribute was held to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Fans were greeted by FDNY’s ceremonial Ladder 343 truck as well as a genuine World Trade Center steel beam provided by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Two vertical columns of light, reminiscent of the World Trade Center’s ‘Tribute in Light,’ illuminated the sky above the stadium. The ceremony featured members of the NYPD and FDNY performing the national anthem.
An American flag, spanning 100 yards from end zone to end zone, was held by players, coaches, and Giants season-ticket members. Giants players Jaxson Dart and Malik Nabers were seen watching fireworks before the game. A Tribute in Light was displayed on the field as a part of the remembrance ceremony.
Upon player introductions, New York City first responders formed a gauntlet for the Giants. Commemorative hats from the NYPD, FDNY, and PAPD were worn by players, coaches, and staff, with ‘Never Forget’ T-shirts used during warm-ups.
The Palumbo family, having lost their FDNY father on 9/11, acted as honorary captains for the coin toss. A photo montage of lives lost on 9/11 played during a stadium-wide moment of silence. NYPD members led the Giants onto the field for the game kickoff, accompanied by Giants legends and uniformed first responders in a ‘Go Big Blue’ chant. New Giants coach John Harbaugh, previously with Baltimore, expressed the day’s significance.
Harbaugh noted, ‘It’s a story about heroes who were willing to run toward danger while others were trying to escape it. To be in New York and honor the heroes of that day who live on forever in our culture, that means everything. You honor it with your effort.’
With John Harbaugh as the new head coach, the Giants aim for improved performances in the NFC East. Images from MetLife Stadium showed players and Harbaugh on the sideline during the national anthem, with service members saluting the flag.
