Michele Tafoya Wins GOP Primary in Minnesota’s Senate Race
Michele Tafoya, who previously worked as an NFL sideline reporter, has won the GOP primary for Minnesota’s Senate race. She ran without the endorsement from the state Republican Party and defeated Adam Schwarze and Royce White. Tafoya will face Democrat Peggy Flanagan, Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor, in the general election. Flanagan secured her nomination by defeating Representative Angie Craig.
Despite the Republican Party of Minnesota endorsing Schwarze, a former Navy SEAL and Marine, Tafoya emerged victorious. This puts her in a challenging position for the general election, as no Republican has won statewide office in Minnesota since 2006. The last Republican to win a U.S. Senate seat in the state was Norm Coleman in 2002.
“We’ve had a crisis of leadership here,” Tafoya told supporters. “This state is ready for change.”

Who Is Michele Tafoya? NFL Background and Career
Tafoya was born on December 17, 1964, in Manhattan Beach, California. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a bachelor’s degree. Her broadcast career began at CBS Sports in 1994, covering college basketball until 1999. She joined ABC Sports and ESPN in 2000, working as a sideline reporter for Monday Night Football and covering the NBA.
In 2011, Tafoya joined NBC’s Sunday Night Football, where she covered four Super Bowls before retiring in 2022 after Super Bowl LVI. By then, she had worked 327 NFL games, the most prime-time and playoff sideline games a reporter has covered at the time. Fred Gaudelli, a longtime executive producer, regarded her as “the best sideline reporter the NFL has ever had.”
Tafoya’s work earned her multiple Sports Emmy Awards, and recognition for play-by-play work with the WNBA. After retiring, she shifted focus to political commentary and consulting, launching a podcast and appearing on television for political discussions.
Announcing her Senate bid in January, Tafoya discussed her goal to address a leadership crisis in Minnesota, highlighting a fraud scandal in social services that influenced Governor Tim Walz’s decision not to seek reelection.

Tafoya has been married to Mark Vandersall since 2000. They met in 1993 while she worked at KFAN-AM in Minnesota. Vandersall is a University of Minnesota graduate, earning a finance degree in 1995, and he played college baseball.
Vandersall is a private wealth advisor in Edina, Minnesota, with Summit Private Wealth Group, holding Certified Financial Planner and Chartered Financial Consultant titles. He has over 20 years of experience in financial services, including six years at Ameriprise Financial. Though he stays out of the spotlight, he occasionally shares family photos on social media.
