Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has intensified his rivalry with Republican nominee Mike Rogers by proposing an unusual challenge. El-Sayed, aged 41, invited Rogers, aged 63, to a game of tackle football, following accusations that Rogers avoided debating him. On the social media platform X, El-Sayed wrote, “Since you’re too afraid to debate me, how about you ‘hold me accountable’ on a football field instead? Tackle, no pads like we used to play when we were kids. I’d be happy to show you [how] much I love football.”
The invitation to play unpadded football highlights the tension between the candidates. While Rogers uses El-Sayed’s previous critique of football culture as a campaign tactic, El-Sayed focuses on themes of sports, fitness, and masculinity in his appeal to male voters. The interaction turned personal, with Rogers’ campaign mocking El-Sayed’s height instead of accepting the challenge.
MIKE ROGERS TAKES AIM AT EL-SAYED’S PAST COMMENTS ON FOOTBALL CULTURE
El-Sayed’s remarks were a response to Rogers criticizing him on Fox News. Rogers portrayed El-Sayed’s past comments on football and the 4th of July as dismissive of popular traditions. Rogers said, “This guy spent hours hating on what most Michiganders would enjoy in their pastimes, and he should be held to account for that.” He suggested that El-Sayed’s views, now deleted, could alienate potential voters.
In a 2021 essay, El-Sayed discussed toxic masculinity in American sports, writing, “The toxic masculinity at the heart of America’s most popular sport — and men’s sports culture more generally — is way deeper than a few emails or a Jay-Z turnaround.” While some interpreted this as disdain for football, El-Sayed has a background in the sport. He played football growing up and was captain of his high school team, describing sports as a “lifeline.”
CONSERVATIVES RESPOND WITH CRITICISM OF EL-SAYED’S SPORT COMMENTS
Despite criticism of male sports culture, El-Sayed defends masculinity and criticizes Democratic approaches to engaging men. His portrayal on social media involves fitness-related content aimed at attracting male support. In response to El-Sayed’s challenge, Rogers’ campaign mocked El-Sayed’s height. The Mike Rogers War Room account posted, “That’s an awfully tall threat coming from down there,” while an official campaign account used a humorous GIF to respond.
El-Sayed, noted for playing lacrosse at the University of Michigan, was recorded as 5 feet, 9 inches tall. A 2008 news story mentioned a height of 5 feet, 8 inches. No comment was given by El-Sayed’s campaign to Fox News Digital’s request for a statement.
