Miles Teller, known for his role in ‘Top Gun,’ shared his past struggle with negative media portrayals. A decade ago, he was described in less-than-flattering terms, affecting his public image. Teller, 39, told IndieWire about avoiding editorial profiles since a 2015 Esquire article misrepresented him.
Miles Teller’s Media Experience
Since then, he refrained from traditional press. He questioned the accuracy of print interviews, concerned they could misquote him or present misleading narratives. Teller expressed a violation of trust over what the article depicted against reality.
“That was so mishandled. The reason why I have not done profiles is because I said, ‘Wow, if I’m not doing this interview on camera, this person can misquote things or put things out of order or say things that didn’t happen.'”
Teller’s reaction included frustration, saying such profiles often focus on negativity instead of genuinely assessing character or professionalism. He shared, “People want to click on negativity.”
The Impact on Career and Reputation
He emphasized the importance of maintaining integrity over media portrayal. Teller noted that working with colleagues on set allows true personalities to be seen beyond controversial profiles. Despite social media backlash, he stood by his perspective, challenging the accuracy of the article’s claims.
Following the 2015 expose, Teller publicly critiqued the publication’s portrayal, affirming, “I don’t think there’s anything cool or entertaining about being a d— or an a—ole.”
Teller, married to Keleigh Sperry since 2019, was hopeful that his peers would recognize his genuine character through shared work experiences rather than news profiles.
