Minneapolis police are actively addressing a shooting near 15 East Grant Street that has resulted in multiple injuries, including two police officers. According to a city alert, residents are advised to stay clear of the area as developments continue.
A confirmed source indicates that a suspect is incapacitated, as scanner audio corroborates this information. Additionally, a senior official informed WCCO that the two officers are expected to recover fully.
The intersection of Nicollet and Grant witnessed a significant law enforcement presence, drawing personnel and vehicles from multiple agencies, not limited to the Minneapolis Police Department. Units from St. Louis Park, Edina, the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota State Patrol, transit police, and deputies from adjacent jurisdictions responded. The ATF field division in St. Paul reported the presence of special agents at the site.
Residents are urged to avoid the vicinity spanning from 12th Street to Franklin Avenue and Hennepin Avenue to Third Avenue South, according to police advice. The Minneapolis Police Department actively remains at the shooting scene affecting multiple victims.
“My public safety team is responding to a shooting downtown Minneapolis this afternoon. State officials are supporting local law enforcement, and more information will be shared as it becomes available,” stated Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
FBI Director Kash Patel acknowledged awareness of the shooting, promising to provide “any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.”
Police efforts focused on an apartment complex on Grant Street, with officers armed with long guns monitoring the building for a prolonged period. Armored SWAT vehicles and ambulances were staged at nearby intersections and blocks approaching downtown. Numerous stretchers were observed being removed from the building, with several individuals appearing to endure leg injuries while others’ conditions remain undetermined.
WCCO’s reporter Conor Wight noted a gathering of onlookers watching activity around the eighth floor of the complex, observing residents inside the windows as police managed the situation.
Abdiwakil Mohamed, a south Minneapolis resident, recounted his experience of hearing the gunshots while driving down La Salle Avenue. He reported hearing three gunshots that resembled rifle fire, noticing a police officer shot in their car. The officer drove forward and collided with another vehicle, he detailed. Mohamed described the shooter as having fired from an elevated point nearby, continuing to target individuals on the ground. He saw another officer removing their bulletproof vest to check for chest injuries. “Police arrived from everywhere,” he said.
