M&Ms are getting a significant update. The Mars company plans to eliminate artificial dyes from M&Ms for the first time, supporting the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” movement. This summer, Mars will launch naturally dyed M&Ms on Amazon, marking a historic shift.
However, two flavors will not be included in the new lineup. Brown and blue M&Ms will be absent due to the difficulty in replicating those colors using natural ingredients.
Why This Change Is Important
Since Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took over as Health Secretary, there has been a growing focus on the risks associated with processed foods and chemical additives. This decision by Mars reflects a broader trend in the industry, following a similar change by Skittles, another Mars product, which eliminated titanium dioxide after it was banned by the European Union.
The Transformation of M&Ms
The primary transformation involves switching to natural dyes this summer. Kennedy and other Republican figures are pushing for manufacturers to remove artificial colors from products sold in the U.S.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into Mars, accusing the company of misleading consumers about the safety of food dyes. Despite Mars’s previous claims of no health risks, Paxton argues artificial dyes are linked to health issues.
Why Artificial Food Coloring Is a Concern
Artificial food coloring is central to the MAHA movement. Concerns about the health impacts on children and the widespread use of chemicals in foods are becoming more widespread.
In a move to address these concerns, the FDA and the Department of Health and Human Services announced plans to remove petroleum-based synthetic dyes by 2025. Kennedy emphasized that these harmful compounds offer no nutritional benefits and pose risks to children’s health.
Countries like those in Europe already impose stricter regulations or warning labels on artificial dyes, prompting U.S. states such as West Virginia to introduce legislation aimed at these substances.
Nestlé has also acted, eliminating synthetic dyes from all U.S. products, which Kennedy applauded. As the crackdown on artificial coloring intensifies, changes in the candy industry are inevitable.
