NASCAR Hosts Race at Naval Base Coronado, Honoring President George H.W. Bush
NASCAR is making history this weekend by hosting a race on a military installation for the first time. The three national series will take on the newly built road course at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, commemorating the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary.
In celebration of this milestone, the Haas Factory Team has introduced a unique livery in partnership with Texas A&M University, honoring George H.W. Bush, the 41st president of the United States and a former Naval aviator. The tribute will be featured on driver Cole Custer’s No. 41 Chevrolet Camaro during the Anduril 250: Race the Base event.
The livery showcases several tributes to President Bush, including the choice of car number—No. 41. Haas Factory Team President Joe Custer shared, “We’ve been thrilled to help tell Texas A&M’s story the past two seasons, and we’re particularly proud to help tell this chapter. President Bush lived one of the greatest American lives. We’re all better off today because of what he did for our country. For our team to race the No. 41 in tribute to him, and now celebrate all he stood for, is a rare honor.”
George H.W. Bush became one of the youngest Naval aviators during World War II after enlisting on his 18th birthday. He served in the Pacific and heroically survived being shot down in 1944. His grandson, Sam Bush LeBlond, commented on the significance of this tribute, mentioning that having a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier named after him was one of the proudest moments of Bush’s life. He emphasized that Bush’s values of service, duty, and love for the country were integral to his life and legacy.
The event at Naval Base Coronado is not just a celebration of racing but also a platform for sharing these important values with a new generation of Americans. The enthusiasm surrounding this race and the homage to half-century legacies demonstrate the fusion of sports and history, promising a memorable experience for attendees.
