The Vegas Golden Knights are reflecting on their recent Stanley Cup Final loss. This marked the third time the franchise reached the final since its inception in 2017. Such quick success in the NHL has resulted in both admiration and disdain from fans.
Star forward Jack Eichel addressed this mixed perception. The team was recently named the most-hated in the league, according to a state-by-state poll conducted by Rotowire in May. The Golden Knights topped the list in 11 states, more than any other team.
The reasons are twofold. Firstly, their rapid achievements are notable. They’ve won the Stanley Cup once, reached the finals three times, and only missed the playoffs once. Secondly, their aggressive approach has stirred controversy. The team often makes bold decisions, such as trading players and firing coaches, including Bruce Cassidy eight games before the playoffs began. They also restricted other teams, like the Edmonton Oilers, from interviewing him.
Eichel, who joined Vegas from Buffalo in 2021, countered the negative perception by highlighting the team’s reputation within the league. “Vegas isn’t on people’s ‘no-trade’ lists,” Eichel stated. He emphasized that players are eager to join the organization and are proud to represent the city.
Despite the external critique, the team’s ability to attract free agents remains strong. Eichel’s words hinted at some players, potentially including Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings, who recently requested a trade and was reportedly open to joining Vegas.
