When the Washington Nationals appointed Paul Toboni as their president of baseball operations on October 1, 2025, at 36 years old, he anticipated focusing on acquiring minor league prospects ahead of his first trade deadline.
However, ten months later, Toboni remains uncertain about how the upcoming August 3 deadline will unfold in Washington, D.C.
“I don’t know what we’re going to be thinking a month from now,” Toboni stated to reporters on June 29.
Currently, the Nationals stand at a balanced 43-43 through June 29, trailing 2.5 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins for the final National League Wild Card spot. This achievement is notable for a team projected to finish last in its division for six of the last seven seasons.
Executive balance between optimism and practicality is crucial. The Nationals’ performance in the next month could guide Toboni’s decisions in either direction.
Though Toboni doesn’t wish to prematurely signal abandonment of a 2026 playoff pursuit, he must acknowledge the team’s youthful roster. Washington features the youngest position player core in Major League Baseball.
Risking future success for immediate gains poses a significant challenge.
“We were pretty careful about not setting expectations too high or too low coming into this,” Toboni remarked. “I’ve been pretty vocal about it.”
The lack of a reliable closer is a prominent issue for the Nationals. With their bullpen suffering 22 losses, tied with the Kansas City Royals for the most in MLB, acquiring a couple of veteran relievers could be beneficial. Adjusting their current bullpen strengths to lower-pressure roles may bring immediate improvement.
While the Nationals’ farm system isn’t in desperate need of reinforcement, enhancing the bullpen could come at a reasonable cost without sacrificing top prospects. Having not reached the postseason since their 2019 World Series win, the franchise, holding two of the top 42 picks in the upcoming July draft, finds compelling reasons to seek bullpen improvements.
