The Boston Celtics made a move to acquire Giannis Antetokounmpo by offering Jaylen Brown and two unprotected first-round picks. However, the Bucks chose to trade him to Miami instead. As the situation developed, Boston is still figuring out how to manage its 2024 Finals MVP.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics have increased the asking price for Brown. They now seek at least four first-round picks in return. Brown, who is 29, had an outstanding season, averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, and he earned second-team All-NBA honors. Teams like the Nuggets, Clippers, Blazers, and Hornets have shown interest, but no deal has been reached.
On ESPN’s “Get Up,” Vince Goodwill criticized Boston’s handling of the trade situation. He stated, “The Celtics have bungled this situation from the very start. If you have made a decision to trade Jaylen Brown for Giannis Antetokounmpo, you better put every available resource in there because you’re risking something like this happening. You have a player who’s out there. The league doesn’t want him to the degree that you feel like you’re getting commensurate value. And it looks embarrassing for the player who did not ask to be traded.”
He emphasized that normally, players are put up for trades when they express a desire to leave or refuse to re-sign. That is not the case with Brown, who has remained committed to the team without demanding a trade or a new contract. Goodwill added, “If they’re tired of Jaylen Brown, that’s fine. That’s their business. But leaving him out there like this, when he’s put so much equity into this team, into this franchise, is disrespectful and embarrassing.”
Meanwhile, trade talks involving Kawhi Leonard, currently in negotiations between the Clippers and Raptors, continue due to a stalled contract extension. Toronto is reportedly open to offering him a long-term deal. In contrast, Brown has not pushed for a trade or a new deal and helped Boston secure the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference with 56 wins.
Typically, when a team insists on trading a player of Brown’s caliber, it’s because the player wants out or there are unresolved financial issues. Brown is neither discontented nor blocking progress over contract talks, and he recently contributed to an NBA title. Doubts linger about whether Boston will find any team willing to give up four first-round picks, as their leverage has diminished.
