NATO Reinforces Collective Defense and Commitment to Ukraine
On Wednesday, leaders of all NATO member states signed a declaration reaffirming their commitment to collective defense. This move asserts NATO’s support for Ukraine amid ongoing conflicts.
President Trump has openly expressed dissatisfaction with NATO and questioned his commitment to the alliance’s collective defense principle. He has reduced U.S. financial support to Ukraine, suggesting Europe should bear more responsibility in countering Russian aggression.
Despite these viewpoints, the leaders restated their “ironclad commitment to our collective defense under Article 5” of NATO’s charter. The declaration commits 70 billion euros (approximately $80 billion) in military aid for Ukraine from Europe and Canada over the next two years.
