Rising Tensions in Iran amid Leadership Divisions

Iran’s president and foreign minister experienced physical attacks this week by supporters of a hard-line faction. This group strongly opposes any agreement with the United States.

Even before the U.S. initiated new strikes on Wednesday, divisions over an agreement with Washington were apparent within Iran’s leadership. These events have further deepened those rifts. One faction within Iran supports negotiations with the U.S., while hard-liners are strongly against any deal.

The pro-negotiation faction has accused the U.S. of violating the cease-fire agreement. President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Washington was unfairly challenging rivals, creating obstacles, and practicing deceit.

The hard-line group is a minority but has expressed their anger toward the Iranian president and the negotiation team.

These tensions are unfolding as Iran hosts a weeklong funeral for its late supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ceremonies have been conducted in five cities across Iran and Iraq. Mr. Khamenei’s body reached Najaf, Iraq, during the American airstrikes and is scheduled for burial in Mashhad on Thursday.

Throughout the funeral events, the hard-line faction in Iran has targeted government officials, reflecting the ongoing internal conflict.
