At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, TSA officers made an unexpected discovery during routine security screening. An unidentified passenger was found carrying illegal substances concealed inside a piece of computer equipment. As officers inspected an Apple Mac mini desktop computer, they noticed an unusual mass and wiring.
TSA reported on October 9 that the computer contained suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and ketamine. The initial discovery was made by Lead TSA Officer Logan Stortz, who initially thought the image might be a part of a standard TSA test. “When I found out it was drugs, I was very surprised,” Stortz said.
Officer Isaiah Martinez Jr. assisted in searching the passenger’s carry-on bag and consulted with Stortz regarding the suspicious findings. Martinez stated, “I was in shock, noticed something was awry and immediately notified a supervisor.”
Further examination revealed hidden compartments in the computer showing tampered areas. An explosives specialist, Robert Rosas Perez II, then intervened when plastic-wrapped material containing a crystallized substance and an orange pill was discovered. “I stopped all procedures at that point,” Perez commented.
Upon completing preliminary field tests, law enforcement was contacted. The arrested passenger’s identity was not disclosed. Supervisory TSA Officer Emily Price noted the unusual method of concealment. Perez added, “This is probably not as uncommon as the public might think.” He highlighted that attempts to smuggle illegal or prohibited items through airport security happen frequently.
TSA clarified its primary focus is detecting threats like weapons and explosives, not enforcing drug laws. However, when suspected illegal drugs are found, they alert law enforcement.
