The NBA has issued lifetime bans for two individuals following an incident during Game 1 of the NBA Finals. One of the individuals was arrested after running onto the court to take a selfie near San Antonio star Victor Wembanyama. The NBA has not specified the role of the second individual involved.
Midway through the fourth quarter, during the game between the Spurs and New York Knicks, a fan entered the court from the sideline opposite the team benches, running into San Antonio’s offensive end. The person, reportedly a juvenile, was quickly apprehended by two security guards. No physical contact was made with Wembanyama or any New York players.
“The individual who entered the court area during Game 1 of The Finals was arrested and will be banned for life from all NBA arenas,” an NBA spokesman said.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver commented on the incident, suggesting the person’s motives were not typical of a fan. The breach resulted in a temporary halt of play for 1 minute and 29 seconds.
Victor Wembanyama stated he was unsure how to react to the situation, recalling a similar moment in January 2024 when a game was interrupted by a bat in the arena.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson downplayed the event, praising security for their swift action and expressing relief that the game resumed quickly.
Adam Silver praised the officiating team for their response, noting the increased security demands in contemporary sports settings.
In another incident during the final minute, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson seemed disturbed by comments from someone at courtside. The league is investigating the situation. Knicks forward Josh Hart acknowledged hearing about the incident but did not witness it.
Fan conduct at NBA events is a priority, with a focus on enforcing the NBA Fan Code of Conduct. This code aims to prevent disruptions to games and protect players and attendees. An NBA memo urges teams to train staff to identify and respond to inappropriate behavior.
The league emphasizes the importance of strict enforcement of these guidelines to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all involved.
