The Netherlands achieved a commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden on Saturday during their World Cup match, recovering from a prior draw to lead Group F. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each scored two goals, propelling the team to triumph.
Brobbey’s early efforts ignited the Netherlands’ momentum, securing a solid start following a 2-2 draw against Japan on Sunday. The team now leads the group with four points. Sweden holds three points, awaiting the outcome of Japan and Tunisia’s upcoming match.
Gakpo also contributed significantly with an assist and goals in the 47th and 54th minutes. His first score, following a cross from Denzel Dumfries, extended the team’s lead to 3-0. A subsequent right-footed shot solidified their advantage.
Sweden struggled to replicate their prior success after a previous 5-1 victory over Tunisia. Their defeat against the Dutch marks their worst since a 7-1 loss to Brazil in 1950.
Their strategy to exploit wide spaces and cross to Brobbey proved effective early in the game.
In the fifth minute, this approach yielded results as Brobbey capitalized on Gakpo’s cross. His second goal followed a sliding finish off another Dumfries cross in the 17th minute.
Anthony Elanga’s 59th-minute strike reduced Sweden’s deficit, ensuring they avoided a shutout. Despite several scoring opportunities, Netherlands’ goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen showcased his prowess with four saves in the first half.
Sweden nearly narrowed the score to 2-1 via Gustaf Lagerbielke’s header, but an offside call nullified the effort. Lagerbielke, from a noble lineage, was among several prominent figures in attendance.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands graced the stadium, joining the predominantly Dutch crowd of 68,777 fans, many of whom participated in the Oranje Fanwalk.
Crysencio Summerville capped the scoring for the Netherlands in the 89th minute, celebrating with Steph Curry’s signature “night night” gesture.
Looking ahead, Sweden faces Japan Thursday night, while the Netherlands will compete against Tunisia in Kansas City.
