The Recording Academy has unveiled five new categories for the 69th Grammy Awards set for February 2027. These additions aim to highlight various music genres, with a particular focus on traditional music. The new award categories include Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album, and Best Latin Song.
The Grammys also announced the renaming of two existing categories. The Best R&B Performance Category will become Best R&B Solo Performance, while Best Folk Album Category will be renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Grammy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. expressed enthusiasm for the changes, stating that 2027 promises to be an exciting year for the Grammy Awards. He noted the updates reflect the growth seen across the music industry and recognizes the diverse genres and creators involved.
The inclusion of categories such as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance and Best Traditional Folk Album demonstrates the Academy’s commitment to honoring traditional music separately from contemporary styles. This move acknowledges the significance of preserving musical traditions.
The Academy’s recognition of Asian music through the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category emphasizes the global reach of pop culture from regions like China, Japan, and Korea. The category targets music utilizing Asian languages, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop.
Fans welcomed the addition, appreciating the attention given to Asian music. The 69th Grammy Awards promises to be more dynamic, with events leading to the awards kicking off on July 7. The online entry period begins then, followed by a voting period in October.
The nominees for the awards will be revealed on November 16, before the main event occurs on February 7 in Los Angeles, marking a celebratory occasion for music enthusiasts worldwide.
