NextEra Energy has established itself as a significant political entity in Florida. This influence has occasionally led to conflicts with regulators, residents, and media outlets. Now, as the company aims to acquire Dominion Energy, it is set to become the largest utility and power company in the country.
NextEra’s aggressive strategies in Florida have come under public scrutiny. Lawsuits and public documents reveal the contentious methods used. In 2023, shareholders filed a lawsuit in federal court. They claimed that the company’s political activities jeopardized their investments by drastically lowering stock prices. Allegations included potential election law violations, spying on journalists, and questionable tactics to acquire a city-owned utility. The lawsuit also raised doubts about the honesty of the company’s executives regarding these efforts.
NextEra defended its actions, stating that two separate investigations found no illegal conduct. It also argued that shareholders could not prove that executives’ statements were meant to deceive or that they caused any financial losses.
The District Court dismissed the lawsuit, but the decision was overturned by a federal appeals court in November. Both the shareholders and NextEra plan to present a settlement to the District Court for approval by June 15.
