Norway’s success in the World Cup largely hinges on Erling Haaland’s prowess. In his debut tournament match, Haaland showcased his capability by scoring twice, contributing significantly to Norway’s 4-1 triumph over Iraq in Group I. The Manchester City forward recorded his 56th and 57th international goals during Norway’s first World Cup appearance since reaching the knockout stage in 1998, prior to Haaland’s birth.
Expressing his determination, Haaland stated, “Of course I will try. It’s about continuing and don’t think too much. It’s difficult at this stage. But I’ll focus on [the] next [game] and of course be happy. But also stay calm.” Both his coach, Stale Solbakken, and the team’s supporters believed he was ready, pointing to Haaland’s relaxed demeanor during the pre-match training session. Solbakken observed, “You could see that he lived up to the occasion.”
The match also highlighted Leo Ostigard’s goal in the 76th minute following a corner kick from Martin Odegaard, and an own goal by Iraq’s Aymen Hussein near the end, sealing Norway’s victory. Despite Hussein’s equalizing goal in the 38th minute, Norway maintained dominance. Haaland put Norway ahead just before halftime by capitalizing on a poor back pass to Iraq’s goalkeeper, Jalal Hassan. Haaland preempted Hassan’s clearance attempt, using his shin to score.
Iraq coach Graham Arnold acknowledged the defensive mistake, stating, “It is what is and we have to learn from it.” Haaland’s initial goal in the 29th minute came after a cross by David Moller Wolfe, triggering enthusiastic reactions from Norway fans who adorned the stands in red.
Despite Iraq’s sizeable contingent of supporters, their national team couldn’t maintain the tie. Amir Alammari’s cross allowed Hussein to head the ball past Norway’s goalkeeper Orjan Nyland, marking Hussein’s 34th international goal. His goal had significance as it clinched Iraq’s World Cup spot after a 40-year absence. Although the defeat was painful, it was a proud milestone for Iraq to return to the tournament.
