Obama Urges Democrats to Prioritize AI Oversight
Former President Barack Obama, at a private fundraiser in New York, urged Democrats to prioritize artificial intelligence (AI) in their political agenda. He emphasized the importance of regulating AI to prevent potential risks, as concerns grow over jobs, privacy, and data centers.
Speaking alongside House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Obama warned about the rapid development of AI in private hands. He stressed the need to manage this progress carefully to harness its benefits effectively. Obama mentioned the potential of AI to accelerate drug development and support clean energy pathways.
Amy Kremer, RNC member and Humans First Chairwoman, expressed agreement on recognizing AI’s risks and benefits. However, she opposed giving more authority to federal government or tech companies. Kremer emphasized the need for safeguards to protect Americans, particularly children and workers, while maintaining national innovation.
Fox News polling highlighted voter concerns about AI’s impact. A July poll revealed that 70% of registered voters opposed AI data centers in their communities. Obama encouraged Democrats to form a clear AI strategy ahead of upcoming elections, addressing privacy and job displacement concerns.
The AI discussion has led to disagreements among Republicans. While some favor expanding data centers, others call for limitations. President Trump has supported rapid AI development, aiming to keep the U.S. competitive with China. He introduced a national AI policy addressing free speech and child safety.
Obamas’ call coincided with industry concerns about AI’s rapid advancement. Anthropics CEO Dario Amodei and tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman backed the need to slow down AI development. On the Democratic side, Jeffries supported Obama’s views, emphasizing the need for decisive AI action and contrasting Republican inaction.
Democrats are planning an AI policy framework under Jeffries, expected to be released later this year.
