Ohio Becomes a Crucial Midterm Battleground
Vice President JD Vance criticized Democrats Amy Acton and Sherrod Brown during his rally in Lima, Ohio. The event comes amid tightening races for Republicans Vivek Ramaswamy and Jon Husted in the Buckeye State as the 2026 midterm elections near.
Ohio shows increased competitiveness this year, despite Donald Trump winning the state in previous races. Polls indicate close gubernatorial and Senate races, pressuring Republicans in a state that has leaned right in recent years.
The trend of midterms often punishing the incumbent president’s party could play out again, particularly with Trump’s low approval rates influencing swing states like Ohio. Voter dissatisfaction with the economy and rising costs may aid Democrats as they attempt a comeback.
Vance Attacks Democratic Candidates
“I have to be honest with you. I don’t know that much about her other than that she was the woman who wanted to mask all of our 2-year-olds and keep them from going to school,” Vance said regarding Acton.
Acton disputes claims made about her drinking, which Republicans have used in ads against her. A 2019 911 call involving her family led to accusations, later explained as an isolated incident by her campaign. Meanwhile, Vance’s comments about Brown focused on what he sees as misuse of tax dollars, comparing Brown unfavorably to past Democrats.
Brown’s campaign responded by criticizing Husted’s record on military votes and tax breaks. Acton’s campaign has not officially responded to Vance’s remarks.
Close Races: Ohio’s Senate and Gubernatorial Contests
Ohio’s Senate race between Husted and Brown, along with the gubernatorial matchup between Ramaswamy and Acton, are pivotal contests. Analysts describe both as toss-ups, reflecting the state’s renewed strategic importance.
Recent polling highlights these tight races. A CNN survey conducted from late September to early October shows Brown with a 6-point lead over Husted. Meanwhile, a separate poll suggests a narrower lead for Husted. Similar disparities appear in gubernatorial race polls, with Acton and Ramaswamy each having slight leads depending on the polling source.
Importance of Ohio Races
Results in Ohio could crucially influence Senate control. With Republicans holding 53 seats, Democrats need to capture four for a majority. Ohio offers a potential seat that Democrats could take from Republicans.
The outcomes will also gauge Democrats’ ability to regain support among rural white voters who shifted towards Republicans during Trump’s presidency.
