Olivia Rodrigo performed at a special Spotify Billions Club Live event in Barcelona, Spain, on May 8, 2026. The Grammy-winning artist declared that her women-focused music festival, Daisy Chain Fields, was “one hundred percent” political. She emphasized that those who disagreed with her message were not obliged to attend.
The festival, headlined by Rodrigo, took place in Irvine, California. It showcased an all-female lineup including Chappell Roan, Sarah McLachlan, and Stevie Nicks. The event raised $20 million for charities focused on women and girls, such as Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights. Rodrigo’s intentions were clear: politics were an integral part of the festival’s design.
One hundred percent, yes,she responded when asked if the festival was political. Rodrigo believed the festival was also about joy, aiming to bring people together for a shared cause.
Olivia Rodrigo introduced Melinda French Gates at the festival, explaining that she wanted the festival to motivate people. She noted a loss of trust in leaders among young people and hoped the festival could inspire collective action.
Rodrigo’s views extended beyond music. Recently, she criticized the Department of Homeland Security for using her music in deportation promotions. Inspired by Lilith Fair, Rodrigo recalled a time when women had more rights. Through Daisy Chain Fields, she sought to make a positive impact on young female fans.
Her song “Serena Joy,” named after a character from “The Handmaid’s Tale,” poetically criticized complacency in human rights. Some speculated its link to President Trump’s policies, but Rodrigo stressed it was more about the larger attack on personal freedoms.
While some praised Rodrigo for integrating politics with art, others saw her actions as divisive. Critics, like podcast host Ben Ferguson, argued she was alienating fans. He labeled it as exclusion rather than inclusion, accusing her of “political arrogance.” Conversely, Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff viewed Rodrigo’s honesty as refreshing in the entertainment industry.
Rodrigo’s engagement in political discourse sparked diverse reactions. Her stance on events like anti-ICE protests illustrated her commitment to activism. While supporters appreciated her transparency, others warned of the risks of making politics central to her brand.
Despite polarized views, Rodrigo raised significant funds for women’s charities, further solidifying her position as a bold and influential public figure.
