Kyiv, Ukraine — Continuous bombardment by Russia on various locations in Ukraine resulted in at least seven deaths and over 50 injuries, according to officials on Monday. The assault targeted residential buildings, offices, data centers, and a building of the National Academy of Sciences in the center of Kyiv during a daytime attack.
While reporting from the scene, CBS News’ Aidan Stretch had to seek safety again as additional Russian strikes targeted the area. Fire and smoke were visible above the Academy of Sciences following a Russian drone strike.
The attacks came after a week of diplomatic discussions at the United Nations about negotiating an end to the over four-year-long invasion. Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesperson, indicated that progress toward peace talks remains unlikely due to recent Ukrainian actions, including during Russia’s parliamentary elections. He remarked that Ukraine is currently ‘paying the price’ for these actions.
In a strong address to the U.N. General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Europe of hindering peace discussions, asserting that the Trump administration is keen on these negotiations, and implying tensions within the NATO alliance.
Impact of Russian Drone Strikes
In the Kyiv area, Russian drone strikes killed four and injured eight, as reported by officials. A further casualty occurred when a woman died in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district. The National Academy of Sciences was hit, a recent addition to the list of cultural sites damaged in Kyiv.
Russian forces also targeted a pharmaceutical company and gas stations in the capital. Emergency services responded after a drone strike hit the National Academy of Sciences building in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
In central Dnipro, a drone hit an office center during business hours, resulting in three deaths and twelve injuries. A strike on a nine-story building in Kharkiv injured 43 individuals, with 11 being children. Authorities in northern Ukraine’s Chernihiv region reported four injuries, including two teenage girls, after a drone attack on a residential area Sunday evening.
Strategic Targets and Civilian Impact
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its forces struck two data centers and gas stations in Kyiv, along with a postal service distribution hub in Odesa. Attacks also targeted a cargo ship in the Black Sea and another at the port of Chornomorsk to disrupt Ukraine’s grain exports, potentially causing food shortages in dependent countries. Moscow claims it focuses on military targets, yet civilian areas are often impacted.
Ukraine’s Gains on the Front Lines
Battleground positions have seen minimal change since recent years due to the heavy drone activity limiting troop movements. Nonetheless, Ukrainian forces recently launched Operation Vivaldi, targeting an 800-mile front line. According to Ukraine’s Third Army Corps, 20 square miles were reclaimed from Russian forces, totaling 68 square miles since the operation’s inception. Soviet-era BTR-60 armored vehicles were repurposed as kamikaze vehicles to breach Russian defenses, also employing ground robots for attacks.
The announced advancements were in the Donetsk region, challenging Russia’s larger military. Russian authorities did not respond to these claims.
Russia’s Defense Ministry announced capturing Novovodiane in the Donetsk region and Ulanove in the Sumy region. These claims remain independently unverified.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated long-range strikes hit defense plants in the Tula and Voronezh regions, along with oil facilities in Krasnodar, striking key components of Russia’s economy and wartime resources.
Local officials in Russia’s Krasnodar region reported fires at three infrastructure sites due to Ukrainian drone attacks. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have downed 254 Ukrainian drones overnight.
