Pamela Anderson battled hepatitis C for years, ultimately spending her own money for treatment when it wasn’t covered by insurance. At 59, she discussed this struggle while receiving amfAR’s Award of Courage in Venice. The organization fights against the HIV/AIDS epidemic and supports hepatitis C research.
Anderson shared her hepatitis C diagnosis from the late ’90s, revealing her fears and concerns about her children. Diagnosed at a time with no cure, she was left with a profound impact on her life decisions, worried more about her children’s futures than her own mortality.
She publicly announced her condition in 2002, attributing the infection to needle sharing with Tommy Lee, her ex-husband. Lee has denied these claims. When a cure became available, Anderson paid for early access with her savings since insurance coverage was unavailable at that time, feeling fortunate but acutely aware others lacked similar access.
In 2015, Anderson completed an FDA-approved yearlong treatment, freeing her from hepatitis C. Despite this victory, she still carries the emotional scars of shame and guilt, reminiscent of past traumas involving childhood abuse, often feeling marked as “damaged goods.”
Anderson experienced significant personal and professional growth since declaring herself “hep C free.” She starred in productions like “The Last Showgirl,” “The Naked Gun,” and “Rosebush Pruning,” enhancing her reputation in the industry. Her latest work, “Place to Be,” is showcased at the Venice Film Festival.
Her career resurgence became an avenue for expressing her truth through art, providing strength and proving her resilience. Anderson stated, “I’m not a victim, I’m a victor,” emphasizing her strength and capability beyond her past struggles.
