Pete Alonso attempted a tactical play during the first game of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. The Baltimore Orioles first baseman aimed to surprise, but the plan backfired. In the top of the fourth inning, Detroit’s Dillon Dingler hit a ball directly towards Alonso. Instead of catching it for an easy out with a runner on first, Alonso let the ball drop.
This decision led to a mistake. Alonso mishandled the ball’s bounce on the dirt and threw to second base, but the throw was late. Both runners advanced safely, and Alonso was charged with an error on the play.
Sometimes you take risks, and they don’t pay off, noted a sports analyst. Alonso’s attempt was risky, and this time it failed.
Although this misstep resulted in two runs for Detroit, Baltimore rebounded. The Orioles secured a 5-3 win, ending a three-game losing streak.
Despite the victory, the game was disappointing for Alonso. Besides the error, he struggled at bat, finishing 0-for-4. Alonso has 10 home runs and 32 RBIs this season, yet his overall performance has been inconsistent, highlighted by a .224 batting average.
Off the field, Alonso signed a lucrative five-year, $155 million contract with the Orioles this offseason. The deal averages $31 million annually.
