Philippine Senator Escapes Senate Amid ICC Arrest Warrant
A Philippine senator, Ronald dela Rosa, sought refuge to avoid arrest under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for an alleged crime against humanity. Officials reported his escape from the Senate after a chaotic incident involving gunfire.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed the nation, urging calm as investigations began into whether the incident was staged to aid dela Rosa’s escape. Senate President Alan Cayetano denied any obstruction, stating no ICC arrest warrant was present against dela Rosa, allowing him to leave.
Dela Rosa, 64, was a former national police chief during Rodrigo Duterte’s presidency. Duterte, arrested last year under similar charges, faces trial in The Hague for anti-drug campaign-related crimes. The ICC accuses dela Rosa of involvement in extrajudicial killings of at least 32 individuals from July 2016 to April 2018.
Political tensions between the Marcos administration and the Duterte family have intensified. Vice President Sara Duterte, daughter of the former president, blames Marcos for what she describes as her father’s ‘kidnapping’ by foreign authorities. She denies the allegations and faces impeachment over unexplained wealth and misuse of funds.
The Senate, led by Cayetano, plans to convene soon to address the impeachment and trial proceedings. Cayetano rose to Senate President with support from a majority of senators, including dela Rosa, who returned to the Senate amid arrest fears.
