Southwest Airlines Captain Jim Curtis marked the end of a distinguished 43-year aviation career in an emotional farewell. His retirement flight was memorable because he co-piloted alongside his daughter, First Officer Julia Curtis. Julia praised her father in front of passengers, calling him her greatest mentor and highlighting the important life lessons he imparted beyond the realm of flying.
An Instagram post by Southwest Airlines celebrating Father’s Day shared this poignant moment that quickly garnered attention online. Captain Curtis, who had served 22 years with Southwest Airlines following a 21-year stint in the U.S. Air Force, was deeply moved by Julia’s tribute during the flight.
“It wasn’t easy keeping my composure during her speech. My lip quivered from the surprise and emotion, but I managed,”
said Curtis, speaking on Fox & Friends Weekend. During their joint flight, Jim and Julia discussed finding happiness in life—another bonding moment before his retirement from piloting.
Retirement Ceremonies are a tradition on a pilot’s 65th birthday, often marked by a ‘fini-flight.’ For Julia, joining her father on his final flight was a long-considered wish. She grew up witnessing her dad go to work, treasuring the chance to honor him personally.
“Sitting next to him and sharing my gratitude was incredibly special. His guidance shaped my journey as a pilot and beyond,”
Julia expressed, looking forward to her own aviation career inspired by her father’s example. Jim Curtis looks forward to retiring on a family walnut farm with his wife, but he’ll harbor many fond memories of his flying days.
Julia shared how her father’s teachings on mindset and work ethic have been crucial in her career:
“You can control two things: attitude and effort. He always said that positive attitude and effort lead to success.”
