President Trump to Attend NBA Finals and Shares Views on MLB Salary Cap
President Donald Trump plans to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals in New York City. Fox News’ Kayleigh McEnany reports that Trump, a lifelong New York Knicks supporter, received a personal invitation from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Silver expressed excitement about Trump’s attendance and noted their shared interest in the sport.
This visit continues Trump’s streak of attending major sporting events while in office. Additionally, he plans to host a UFC fight at the White House on June 14.
In a different conversation aboard Air Force One, OutKick’s Dan Zaksheske interviewed President Trump about the MLB’s salary structures. Trump expressed firm support for implementing a salary cap, aligning with his views on maintaining competitive balance in sports. He mentioned that without a salary cap, sports lose their essence.
Trump highlighted that major leagues like the NFL, NHL, and NBA already incorporate a salary cap, unlike MLB, which remains without one. He remarked, “They should’ve done it a long time ago.” His administration has also advocated for NIL laws, drawing parallels with professional sports leagues’ salary regulations, and emphasized the financial strains incurred by major schools.
The MLB and the MLBPA are currently engaging in collective bargaining discussions. Recently, they proposed a salary cap of $245.3 million for the year 2027. This season’s payroll disparities were notable, with the Los Angeles Dodgers having the highest Opening Day payroll at $415.2 million, compared to the Miami Marlins’ $81.8 million.
