President Trump’s Support for Pope Leo XIV’s Recovery
President Donald Trump extended his well-wishes to Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday following the pontiff’s diagnosis of lung cancer. Trump shared his sentiments while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One during a trip from Arizona to Montana.
The 71-year-old Pope underwent surgery to remove part of his right lung. Trump expressed optimism for his recovery, stating, “I want to see Pope Leo get well. I hear the prognosis for that type of a problem. It’s a cancer. It’s big stuff. Anytime you have cancer. But the prognosis seems to be good, I’ve watched. And we just want to wish him our love and our best wishes.”
Trump also highlighted his friendship with the Pope’s brother, whom he regards as a strong supporter of his political movement. “His brother is a friend of mine, who’s a great guy, and his wife. You know, they’re big Trump supporters. They have MAGA all over their house. And I can say that his brother loves him a lot. Loves the Pope a lot, and that’s good, but I just want to wish him well. Get better fast,” Trump remarked.
The Vatican announced the Pope’s diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma after a 90-minute surgery at Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. During the procedure, doctors removed the lower lobe of Pope Leo’s right lung without encountering complications, according to the Holy See Press Office. The cancer diagnosis was confirmed following an examination of the tissue collected during the surgery.
The Vatican added that the Pope had earlier disclosed the discovery of a small lump in his lung. Doctors recommended early-stage surgery, which proceeded as planned. After the operation, he returned to his hospital room for a brief observation period and later awakened normally.
Pope Leo XIV previously held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Vatican City last May. President Trump has praised Rubio’s ability to strengthen diplomatic relations.
