Gov. JB Pritzker launched a statewide campaign bus tour, sharply criticizing Republican President Donald Trump while campaigning for a third term as Illinois governor. Emphasizing affordability and support for working people, Pritzker focused on countering the adverse impacts he attributed to Trump’s administration.
Outside the Adler Planetarium, Pritzker, joined by running mate Christian Mitchell, underscored the importance of the gubernatorial race in Illinois. He linked his opponent Darren Bailey’s support for Trump as a reason for concern, noting Bailey’s endorsement by Trump during the 2022 governor race, which Pritzker won by a wide margin.
Pritzker pointed to Trump’s administration as a significant challenge for Illinois, highlighting efforts to maintain balanced budgets while managing reduced federal support in areas like healthcare and food assistance. Despite Bailey’s absence from his opening remarks, Pritzker called him a “Donald Trump sycophant” unwilling to distance himself from the former president, echoing this sentiment in response to reporters’ questions.
Bailey and his running mate appeared at a Tyson Foods plant subject to job cuts. Here, Bailey questioned Pritzker’s economic policies, criticizing his administration’s response to job losses. Pritzker acknowledged the issue at Tyson but emphasized national economic challenges, including rising beef prices and facility closures.
Pritzker’s criticism extended to Bailey’s views on education, particularly regarding curricula at the Full Armor Christian Academy, defending scientifically disproven teachings. The Bailey campaign countered by condemning Pritzker’s remarks as irresponsible, especially in light of threats received by the school.
The bus tour also included a stop at the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 14, where Pritzker celebrated union partnerships and received endorsements. Christian Mitchell joined in criticizing Bailey’s alignment with former Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s anti-union stance, arguing that Bailey serves corporate interests aligned with Trump’s agenda.
On the same day, Pritzker signed legislation creating regulations for e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric unicycles, set for implementation next year. His office also announced Illinois received its 11th credit upgrade since 2021 from a major Wall Street ratings agency.
