Pro-Israel Students on Shifting Political Dynamics
Pro-Israel students at American colleges are observing a shift in political dynamics on campus. This change is also affecting the Democratic Party, pushing some young Jewish voters towards conservative ideologies.
Addison Stone, a senior at the University of Michigan, described a growing sentiment among students that portrays America negatively. This atmosphere was evident even before the intensified tensions following events after October 7. These sentiments are reinforced by both academic influences and what is shared on social media.
Speaking at the Israel on Campus Coalition’s national summit in Washington, students remarked that the political trends present on campuses are increasingly reflected in Democratic Party politics. As the progressive wing of the party advances, disagreements over Israel surface more prominently.
Dylan Goldman, a left-leaning senior at UC Berkeley, criticized Democratic lawmakers for supporting socialist candidates who usually show hostility towards Israel, seeing it as a misstep.
Goldman mentioned that many Jewish Democrats, who have diverse political considerations, feel alienated by their party, leading them toward conservative values.
The recent victory of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary showcases the success of left-wing candidates against the Democratic establishment.
During the summit, over a thousand pro-Israel students gathered for advocacy training and discussions. Topics focused on supporting Israel, fighting antisemitism, and strengthening U.S.-Israel ties on campuses.
Stone noted that both academic discourse and trends on social media contribute to a cultural shift where negative ideologies about America and Israel become normalized. This shift is seen in acts like the burning of American and Israeli flags on campuses.
Despite these challenges, the summit’s organizers emphasized the resilience of Jewish students facing campus hostility. Jacob Baime, CEO of Israel on Campus Coalition, pointed out the open hostility Jewish students experience, such as intimidation and harassment.
Baime stated that these students are well-prepared, organized, and determined to defend their beliefs.
John Fetterman, speaking at the summit, also highlighted the Democratic Party’s evolving stance on Israel as a significant issue. His support for Israel often places him in conflict with party members, especially concerning broader Middle East conflicts and his approval of President Donald Trump’s actions against Iran.
Fetterman, who claims to have supported Trump’s administration in bombing Iranian nuclear facilities, justified it as a necessary measure to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. He framed the situation with Iran as a battle over American values and the Western role in the region.
Fetterman expressed pride in aligning with America, civilization, democracy, and Israel, viewing it as a key ally that embodies these principles.
