Progressive Francesca Hong Loses Wisconsin Democratic Primary

In Wisconsin, state Rep. Francesca Hong lost the Democratic gubernatorial primary to Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. Many viewed the election as a test of whether Democrats in battleground states prefer progressive candidates or establishment figures.

Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, was initially favored to win. Polls showed her with a lead, though Crowley ultimately won by a narrow margin. Concerns over Hong’s electability contributed to her loss.

“I would’ve liked to have voted for her, but I wasn’t sure she would win. So, I voted for Crowley,” stated Linda Pullman, a Madison resident.

David Crowley had support from retiring Gov. Tony Evers, who warned that Hong’s nomination might risk Democratic control of the governor’s mansion. Hong’s progressive views, including past comments on abolishing the U.S. Senate and canceling Thanksgiving, were seen as liabilities in a swing state like Wisconsin.

Some voters cited their hesitance to support Hong due to her stance on defunding the police, while others feared she would struggle against Republican candidate Rep. Tom Tiffany, backed by Donald Trump.

“Seeing Hong was not doing so well against Tom Tiffany — who I think would be very devastating to the state — [factory-set my decision],” said Tim, a Crowley voter.

Hong’s campaign attracted endorsements from national progressives like Reps. Ilhan Omar and Ro Khanna. However, Sen. Bernie Sanders declined to endorse her, citing insufficient familiarity with her campaign.

The upcoming November race between Crowley and Tiffany is considered a significant opportunity for a Republican victory.
