In key House races where Democrats aim to gain ground in November, progressive leaders are emphasizing universal health care and higher taxes on the wealthy. This approach seeks to attract support even from Republican voters.
Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont believes in a strategy where candidates championing the working class prevail across various regions. In early May, Sanders joined forces with Abdul El-Sayed, a Senate hopeful from Michigan, to campaign together.
Randy Villegas is running for Congress in California, a region not known for liberal leanings. Despite it being a conservative stronghold, Villegas embraces populism and advocates for Medicare for all. His campaign receives backing from prominent progressives like Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
His opponent, Republican Representative David Valadao, views Villegas as misaligned with district values. Republicans attempt to frame him as a socialist, while secretly funding his primary campaign against a moderate Democrat. They aim to set up an easier match for Valadao in the general election.
Villegas remains confident. He believes his message, rejecting corporate money and advocating for healthcare reforms, resonated with voters beyond party lines. Issues like valley fever, diabetes, or cancer affect everyone, regardless of past political choices.
Reinforcing this push, Ocasio-Cortez, like Sanders, endorses progressives in fiercely contested districts where centrist Democrats traditionally hold sway. As Democrats vie for Congressional control, the active presence of these leaders in primary races underscores their commitment to progressive ideals.
