Protest Against Conservative Christian Summit in Lincolnshire
Protesters gathered on Tuesday evening at a prominent intersection in Lincolnshire to express their opposition to a conservative Christian educators’ summit. This event, organized by Turning Point USA, took place at a nearby hotel. The summit, hosted by the right-wing group, sparked criticism from progressive activists. Two Lake County chapters of Indivisible, a progressive group, spearheaded the protest. Their aim was to alert the public about what they see as the group’s attempt to integrate “white Christian nationalism” into education, according to one organizer.
The protest, organized by Indivisible Western Lake County and Indivisible Northeast Lake County, drew 60 to 70 participants. Katie Sayler from Indivisible NE Lake County clarified that their group is nonpartisan. They focus on opposing extremist views, particularly those resonating with a white Christian nationalist perspective.
Sayler expressed concern about the message of Turning Point USA, warning about the danger it poses. The group worries about the infiltration of extreme messages into schools. This year marked the second time the Turning Point Education initiative held its summit in Lake County. In 2023, they hosted a similar event in Deerfield. As of Wednesday, TPUSA representatives did not comment on the protest.
On its website, Turning Point Education openly declares its conservative and Christian objectives, which include reclaiming education to focus on virtuous themes and religious foundations. The summit featured nearly 30 speakers, including Erika Kirk, wife of the late Charlie Kirk, and other conservative proponents.
Protesters chanted, carried signs, and played drums. They expressed disapproval of both President Donald Trump and TPUSA. One local resident, Julia Plescia, carried a sign and shared her concerns about potential religious indoctrination in schools. Her activism stemmed in part from the educational policies of the current administration.
During the protest, some cars honked in approval, while others showed dissent. Despite these differing reactions, the event underscored Lake County’s political leanings, which have tilted more Democratic over the years. The county’s political landscape has witnessed significant changes in voter alignment, with Democratic supporters increasing in recent elections.
Local political dynamics continue to evolve. The controversy surrounding the use of changing rooms by a transgender student in Deerfield sparked discussion. Protest crowds often showcased support for diverse perspectives over conservative views. Yet, there remains concern among protesters about TPUSA’s efforts to establish a foothold in Lake County.
Joe Salvi, a young Republican candidate, has actively promoted the growth of a new Republican base. He serves as president of Lake County Young Republicans and has been involved in initiating local chapters of Club America, a high school equivalent to Turning Point. These chapters are present in several Lake County schools, although not all are confirmed publicly.
