This week, a tragic B-52 crash occurred at California’s Edwards Air Force Base, resulting in the deaths of eight men. The victims included a mix of active-duty airmen, a reservist, and civilian specialists, highlighting the diverse personnel involved in maintaining the long-serving bomber, according to military officials.
Who Were the Victims of the B-52 Bomber Crash?
The victims were identified as Colonel Gregory Watson, 53; retired Lieutenant Colonel Miles Middleton, 50; Lt. Colonel Gabriel Estrella, 40; Major Alexander Davis, 34; Major Robert Dee, 40; Major Brad Hovey, 35; Jeromy Smith, 32; and Christopher Rischar, 41. Among the civilians was Christopher Rischar, a flight test engineer with defense contractor JT4, who had spent a decade working at Edwards. His wife, Rebecca, mentioned his lifelong passion for aviation and his enthusiasm shared with their two teenage children. The couple recently celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary.
Jeromy Smith, another flight test engineer tasked with working with the U.S. Department of Defense, also perished in the accident. His wife shared with local media that he passed away doing what he loved. Watson and Middleton, a weapons systems officer and pilot respectively, were employed by Boeing during the incident. Boeing expressed their condolences, acknowledging the profound impact of their deaths.
What Caused the Crash?
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff on Monday at the Mojave Desert base. The airfield remained closed on Wednesday. However, most other operations have resumed, according to a base spokesperson. Officials have not yet determined the cause and mentioned that the investigation might extend up to six months.
The aircraft was undergoing a test mission as part of a program to extend the service life of the B-52 fleet, originally introduced in 1955, through at least 2050. The aircraft had been equipped with a modernized radar system and was being used as a test platform to inform future upgrade decisions. Preliminary reports suggest that the plane took off around noon in clear weather conditions but crashed abruptly, resulting in compact wreckage. Aviation safety experts speculate possible failures in flight controls or engines, with multiple factors such as the plane’s age and maintenance history expected to be thoroughly examined.
Edwards Air Force Base is the home of the 412th Test Wing and performs daily tests of aircraft and weapons systems. It holds a significant place in aviation history as the location where test pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947.
What is the Cost of a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress?
The last produced model, the B-52H, had a price of approximately $9.29 million in 1960–1961 dollars. Adjusted for inflation the cost is estimated to be around $80–110 million today. Although no new B-52s have been constructed since 1962, restarting production would likely cost several hundred million dollars per aircraft, comparable to or more expensive than modern non-stealth bombers.
The U.S. Air Force plans to upgrade its fleet of B-52Hs to the B-52J configuration with new engines, radar, avionics, and other improvements. The engine replacement program is valued at an estimated $8-9 billion for the entire fleet.
