Recent shootings in Chicago since Friday evening have resulted in at least seven fatalities and 38 injuries, according to police reports. This surge in violence has spurred President Donald Trump to once again advocate for military intervention in Chicago, the nation’s third-largest city.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday morning, Trump questioned, “Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!!” Despite Trump’s offer, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has consistently declined the notion of military intervention and did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Under Trump’s administration, National Guard troops have been deployed to combat crime in Democratic-led cities, including New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee. While data from the Chicago Police Department indicates a slight increase in shooting incidents compared to the same period last year, overall violent crime rates in Chicago have decreased in recent years, mirroring national trends.
Preliminary figures from Chicago police highlight at least two dozen shooting incidents since 5 p.m. Friday. The victims include a 21-year-old shot in the chest on Sunday, an 18-year-old hit in the armpit on Saturday evening, and a 50-year-old shot in the chest on Friday.
Friday evening also saw a mass shooting where 12 individuals were wounded when occupants of an SUV opened fire on a crowd gathered on a street. The victims, ranging from 17 to 47 years old, were treated at various hospitals. Another man, who sustained undisclosed injuries, refused medical assistance. Notably, this incident occurred on Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S.
Earlier that day, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama inaugurated their presidential center on the South Side. Mayor Brandon Johnson commented on the violence, stating, “What should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence.” He expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, insisting that “violence has no place in our city, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
The issue of gun violence over the weekend extended beyond Chicago. In Philadelphia, a shooting early Sunday resulted in two deaths and two injuries, as reported by Fox-29. Cincinnati experienced a deadly shooting Saturday evening, killing three people, according to WLWT. Meanwhile, Kansas City, Missouri, police are investigating a Friday evening shooting that killed one person and wounded five others.
