As the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup approaches, a new rule has been introduced that could influence the championship’s course. FIFA proposed a regulation declaring any player who covers his mouth during a confrontation with an opponent would face a red card. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) gave its unanimous approval in April.
Miguel Almiron, a player for Atlanta United and Paraguay’s national team, became the first to be penalized under this rule. He received a red card for shielding his mouth before halftime in Paraguay’s 1-0 victory over Turkiye on June 19.
Australia’s midfielder, Jackson Irvine, voiced his opinion on the rule the next day. In an interview with ESPN Australia & NZ, Irvine said, “The rule itself? Listen, I think it’s clear. We were all told before. It’s going to be controversial in some ways because we don’t know the nature of what it was, but when you look at what’s happened in the past, especially around the incident with Vinicius Junior, I think it takes everything out of the equation.”
Irvine further stated, “If you’re saying something to someone that you don’t want to be seen, then I think it’s safe to say that if you can’t be seen saying it, then it shouldn’t be said.” His comments received widespread support, with many praising the clarity and honesty of his response.
This development follows an incident involving Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni, who shielded his mouth when speaking to Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior during a UEFA Champions League match in February. Vinicius accused Prestianni of using slurs, leading to a six-match UEFA ban for Prestianni. In response to such incidents, FIFA has committed to enforcing new measures regarding players covering their mouths in this World Cup.
