Reflections and Tributes Mark 25 Years Since 9/11
Attorney General Todd Blanche honored law enforcement officers who died in connection to their 9/11 service, sharing reflections on his time in New York during the attacks. Speaking at a 9/11 event hosted by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C., Blanche expressed deep appreciation for first responders. “I lived in lower Manhattan and on Long Island during 9/11,” he said, noting how after the attacks, NYPD and FDNY hats were worn ubiquitously by citizens, sports teams, and politicians as a sign of unity and support.
The bravery of Welles Crowther, who died saving others in the World Trade Center, was commemorated with a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom. Crowther, known for his red bandana, repeatedly returned to the collapsing towers to rescue people.
The CIA, on the 25th anniversary, released 71 declassified documents covering intelligence on the 9/11 attacks from February 1998 to September 12, 2001. These documents, now accessible on the CIA’s website, shed light on the events leading up to the attacks.
In Krakow, Poland, American soldier Victor DeJesus played taps from St. Mary’s Basilica, marking the moment the World Trade Center was struck. DeJesus, honoring the victims of 9/11, performed this solemn tribute from the historic tower known for its hourly trumpet melody.
