Rescue teams from Laos and Thailand are engaged in a critical operation to save seven villagers trapped in a cave in central Laos. The group entered the cave in Xaisomboun province on May 19, seeking gold. Unfortunately, heavy rain led to flash flooding, which blocked their exit.
According to Bounkham Luanglath, leader of Laos’ Rescue Volunteer for People, one person from the group managed to escape and informed the authorities about the situation. Efforts are ongoing to determine the conditions of the remaining trapped individuals.
The cave, known for its narrow chambers, attracts locals searching for gold. Officials had previously cautioned against entering due to potential risks.
Thai rescue workers arrived on Sunday, and divers have begun exploring submerged sections of the cave, hoping to reach the stranded villagers. Despite the urgency, Laos’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not issued any statements. The government, known for its tight control over information, has not revealed further details.
