A significant change in climate modeling has sparked debate among scientists and caught the attention of political leaders. An international team of researchers recently revised the emissions scenarios utilized to study global warming, discontinuing the use of a high-emissions trajectory known as RCP8.5.
This scenario, which projected severe levels of planet-warming pollution, had become a standard reference in climate studies over the past decade. However, researchers now note that RCP8.5 is “implausible” given recent trends in energy use, particularly the decline in coal consumption.
This decision prompted discussions among scientists online and in policy circles. Critics of the scenario had long argued that it presented an unrealistic outlook as it assumed countries would burn coal at excessively high rates. They contended that any findings or reports based on this scenario may have overstated climate risks. Questions arose about why the adjustment took so many years to implement.
Despite the shift, some researchers caution against dismissing severe warming scenarios entirely. They assert that while the likelihood is low, scientists must still consider extreme outcomes in their studies to prepare for all possibilities.
