Romanian Military Downs Drone, Highlights Need for Defense Enhancement

Officials in Romania have confirmed the downing of a drone on Sunday. It marks the third occasion in recent days that NATO aircraft have intercepted uncrewed aerial vehicles.

A Romanian F-16 fighter jet intercepted the drone at 10:13 a.m. local time. The incident occurred near the border with southwestern Ukraine, as reported by Romanian President Nicușor Dan.

Romania often experiences drone incursions from Ukraine during Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian ports near the Danube River. This river acts as a natural boundary between Romanian and Ukrainian territories.

The land border between Romania and Ukraine spans approximately 400 miles. Despite regular drone intrusions into NATO airspace, these incidents have not led to discussions among the alliance’s 32 members about a collective response.

However, such incidents have prompted NATO’s eastern European members to enhance their anti-drone defenses. Romania’s defense ministry stated that the drone was downed “safely,” just over seven miles northeast of the port of Sulina within Romania’s territorial waters.

While the drone’s origin wasn’t confirmed, President Dan criticized the persistent violations of Romanian, NATO, and European Union airspace.

On Saturday, Romanian officials reported the downing of another drone in an unpopulated border area after radar detection at 8:22 a.m. local time.

This followed Friday’s incident when NATO, under alliance command, deployed two Romanian F-16s and two Italian Eurofighter jets to intercept a drone nearing Romanian airspace. This drone was later identified as Russian-made by Romanian investigators.

The debris from this incident fell near two towns northeast of Bucharest. The Romanian defense ministry confirmed no casualties or injuries occurred.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s southwestern Odesa region, close to Romania’s border, experienced multiple air raid alerts early Sunday morning according to its governor.

Russia’s defense ministry announced an attack on Ukraine’s Chornomorsk port, southwest of Odesa city. The target was identified as fuel tanks used by the Ukrainian military.
