Rosie O’Donnell has opened up about her choice to undergo a facelift and her views on future cosmetic surgeries. While attending the 2026 Tony Awards, the 64-year-old comedian explained why she opted for the procedure and whether she’s considering other surgeries. O’Donnell shared her thoughts in an interview with E! News, emphasizing authenticity in her decision.
Reasons for the Facelift
O’Donnell attributed her decision to her significant weight loss over the past three years. She has been using Mounjaro to manage her diabetes, resulting in a loss of over 50 pounds. This weight loss left her with extra skin around her face, highlighting two lines that gave off a sad appearance. She recalled how people in Ireland often commented on her supposed sadness. She felt it was important to clarify that her expression was simply her natural look.
“Authenticity is the goal in these days and times, and people are lying about everything all day to the American public.”
She stressed the importance of truth and love, choosing to share her complex feelings surrounding the surgery.
Facing Personal Beliefs and Guilt
Rosie O’Donnell revealed that she once held strong beliefs against facelifts, viewing them as a betrayal of feminism and aging. Her essay on Substack described a change in perspective after losing weight. She noted that the issue was not wrinkles but gravity, and how this realization led to questioning her previous stance.
O’Donnell also shared personal anecdotes involving her child, Clay. Clay’s reactions and comments challenged her decision, with the child’s words impacting her thoughts deeply. This interaction prompted O’Donnell to reconsider her decision, delaying it for several months for reflection.
Ultimately, she recognized that her body shouldn’t conform to any external authority, even positive ones like feminism.
Emotional Journey and Outcome
In January, O’Donnell finally proceeded with the facelift. She expressed a desire to retain her essence while looking less haunted, resulting in a more well-rested appearance. Despite this result, she grappled with guilt and deceit, questioning to whom she owed her honesty.
“Because that’s still not freedom— that’s just a different authority telling you what you’re allowed to do with your own face.”
Rosie acknowledged her privileged position, acknowledging the facelift’s cost exceeded any car she had purchased. She reflected on her life’s journey and her role as a mother, embracing personal freedom and expression as she moves forward.
