On the eve of a NATO summit, Russia launched a significant attack on Kyiv, Ukraine, marking the second major strike in less than a week. Explosions reverberated across the capital early Monday morning.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who plans to attend the NATO summit in Turkey, had cautioned that Russia was preparing a new large-scale assault on Kyiv. His warnings proved accurate as loud explosions were heard in the city shortly after.
The regional military administration confirmed the presence of flying ballistic missiles. In response, Kyiv’s Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, advised residents to seek shelter for their safety.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, reported that at least seven people lost their lives in the attack. Additionally, over twenty others sustained injuries.
As dawn approached, thick, black smoke filled the skyline. Emergency services scrambled to address several fires and evacuate residents from a damaged apartment building where individuals remained trapped.
This attack follows a recent 12-hour bombardment on Thursday, where Russia targeted Kyiv with missiles and drones. That assault resulted in 31 deaths and over 100 injuries.
The NATO summit set to begin on Tuesday in Ankara, Turkey, will primarily focus on the alliance’s response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
