President Donald Trump on Sunday shared an altered image featuring former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama. The fake photo depicts the Obamas waving beside Air Force One, which appeared vandalized with graffiti. This act follows months after another offensive post portraying the couple as jungle primates, leading to bipartisan condemnation.
The modified image shows the Obamas smiling next to a presidential plane decorated with graffiti. The inscriptions included Obama’s campaign slogan ‘Yes We Can,’ the name ‘Obama,’ and ‘BLM,’ referencing Black Lives Matter. Arabic graffiti on the plane says ‘alhamdulillah,’ meaning ‘praise be to God.’ Graffiti often symbolizes crime and urban decay, having been used in previous racial slurs against Black individuals.
Trump has consistently criticized the Obamas and engaged in inflammatory, sometimes racist rhetoric. His accusations range from challenging Obama’s birthplace to broad derogatory statements about predominantly Black countries. Posts on his website, Truth Social, have incited anger.
In February, amid Black History Month, Trump shared a racist post depicting the Obamas as primates. This image was removed after backlash from civil rights groups and Republican senators. Trump did not apologize, attributing the post to a staffer.
This new controversy coincided with Trump’s maiden voyage on a $400 million Air Force One gifted by Qatar. Its design was changed from the light blue intended for sky camouflage to Trump’s preferred navy-blue with red and gold stripes.
After a speech marking the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary at Washington’s National Mall on Saturday, Trump spent Sunday at his Virginia golf club. He plans to head to Turkey for a NATO summit on Monday.
The White House and a spokesperson for the Obamas did not reply to requests for comments.
In another recent post, Trump displayed an altered image of Obama’s presidential library with garbage imagery and desolation. The accompanying caption declared it would become a ‘Mecca’ for America’s adversaries. Trump has publicly condemned the library and posted about it multiple times.
In a series of posts that Sunday, Trump commented on Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. A previous image showed her smiling with the text ‘RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED.’ Trump claimed Meloni repeatedly requested a photo during the Group of Seven summit, alleging she pleaded for it.
This claim led Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani to cancel a Washington trip, and Meloni called Trump’s story ‘completely fabricated,’ stating neither Italy nor herself begged.
